Gaza Needs 200,000 Prefabricated Houses to Meet Humanitarian Needs

JAKARTA - The Government Operations Room, the Palestinian government center, said on Sunday that the Gaza Strip needs about 200,000 prefabricated houses to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of refugee families, providing safer shelter in the face of bad weather conditions.

In a press statement, the operating room said the current storm has flooded and destroyed thousands of tents across Gaza, worsening the humanitarian emergency.

The statement noted that the Al-Rasheed Coastal Road, which stretches about 26 km, was flooded, damaging tents set up along the road due to rising sea waves caused by the storm, quoted from WAFA (29/12).

The statement further stressed that the bad weather had exacerbated the suffering of Palestinians living in flimsy tents that provided only minimal protection against rain and freezing temperatures.

Homes that were partially destroyed have also collapsed, posing an immediate threat to residents' lives, amid a lack of safe alternative shelters.

The statement added that humanitarian organizations are unable to meet the urgent needs of refugees due to severe supply shortages and the continued restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation on aid entering the Gaza Strip.

The operating room also called on the United Nations and international organizations to pressure Israel to immediately allow the entry of prefabricated housing units and shelter equipment to alleviate the suffering of refugees and reduce the life-threatening risks they face.
