Israel Cries Foul at Somaliland, UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting Today

JAKARTA - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold an emergency session regarding Israel's recognition of Somaliland which has been strongly criticized by many countries as an attempt to interfere in the territorial affairs of other countries.

"The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session on Monday [December 29] following Israel's recognition of the Republic of Somaliland," Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said on his X account, @dannydanon, on Saturday local time.

Somaliland is known as a region of Somalia that separated itself since 1991 but has never been recognized by UN member countries.

The Somali government rejects Somaliland's recognition of sovereignty. Somaliland, which is located in the northwest of Somalia, is still considered an integral part of the Somali Republic.

Although it was considered a blatant attack on the sovereignty and territorial unity of the Somali state, Danny said Israel was open to political discussions.

"We will not avoid political discussions. Israel will continue to act responsibly and wisely, to strengthen cooperation with partners who contribute to regional stability," said Danny.

Israel is known to be the first country in the world to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent country on Friday, December 26.
