Air Ticket to Aceh Hits Rp8 Million, Observer: That's Carter's Flight

JAKARTA - The high price of domestic air tickets to Sumatra has become a public spotlight. In fact, it is rumored that tickets for the Jakarta-Aceh route are priced at Rp. 8 million. Meanwhile, if you take an international flight to Malaysia and continue to Medan, it only takes Rp. 2 million.

Flight observer Gatot Raharjo emphasized that the high tariff was in the category of charter flights that were not under the government's tariff regulation scheme.

Gatot said that the tariff for scheduled economy class flights has been regulated through the Decree of the Minister of Transportation (KM) Number 106 of 2019. In the policy, the upper limit tariff (TBA) for the Jakarta-Banda Aceh route is set in the range of Rp. 2.2 million one way.

"If you refer to KM 106 in 2019, the upper limit tariff for economy class aircraft from Jakarta to Banda Aceh is around Rp. 2.2 million one way. If you add the airport PSC, VAT, and other costs, it will not be up to Rp. 3 million for the ticket price," said Gatot to VOI, Wednesday, December 24.

Therefore, Gatot ensured that tickets with prices up to Rp8 million could not be sold by scheduled airlines that must comply with government tariff provisions.

"So if the Rp8 million is definitely not a scheduled airline, but a charter airline," said Gatot.

According to Gatot, charter flights are indeed outside the upper and lower rate arrangements. The price of the ticket is entirely determined based on an agreement between the airline and the charter party or charter passenger.

"If it is a charter, the price is not regulated, but the agreement between the airline and the charter passenger," he explained.

Gatot added that the sale of charter flights usually occurs when passenger demand is very high or when scheduled flight tickets have sold out, especially during peak travel periods.

"It is possible that airlines sell charters because there is high demand from passengers, or because the schedule of scheduled flights is over. So it is sold on charter because the price can be higher," he concluded.

Previously reported, a netizen's upload on social media suddenly went viral because he shared his experience choosing an international route to Malaysia and then flying to Medan which was much cheaper than a direct domestic flight.

The story was uploaded by Marsha Chikita Fawzi through an account named @chikifawzi. In the photo uploaded on December 22, 2025, Chiki told about her experience when she was going to Central Aceh.

Chiki admitted that he was surprised to find that the Jakarta-Medan ticket price reached around Rp. 8 to Rp. 9 million. Because of the high ticket price, Chiki looked for other alternatives, he finally chose a detour route by flying from Jakarta to Malaysia for Rp. 1.5 million. Then continue the journey from Malaysia to Medan with a plane fare of Rp. 500,000 for one way.

With this detour route, Chiki said the total cost to get to Medan was only IDR 2 million. Much cheaper than direct domestic flights.

"I want to go to Central Aceh, flight through Malaysia because the price is more reasonable. If the flight to Medan is Rp8-Rp9 million, if it is through Malaysia it is around Rp2 million (Jkt-Malaysia Rp1.5 million. Malay-Medan Rp500.000-an. However, when compared to the detour option like Chiki Fawzi chose through Malaysia, the price of the direct flight ticket Jakarta-Medan is still cheaper.

Based on the same data, tickets for the Jakarta-Kuala Lumpur route served by Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia are in the range of IDR 2 million to IDR 3.2 million per passenger.
