Yogyakarta Becomes the Favorite Destination for Family Holidays at the End of 2025

JAKARTA - Yogyakarta was named the most popular family tourist destination in the country during the 2025 year-end holidays. This cultural city managed to shift other destinations thanks to a combination of educational tourism, cultural wealth, and a variety of recreational options that are friendly for all ages.

Based on the Travel Outlook 2026 report from a digital travel service platform, the interest of family tourists in Yogyakarta has increased significantly. Accommodation search data shows that this city ranks first as a holiday destination for the end of the year with family.

Senior Country Director of Agoda for Indonesia Gede Gunawan said Yogyakarta managed to rise to the top position as the main destination for family vacations, surpassing other popular destinations.

User interest to visit Yogyakarta increased by about 29 percent compared to the previous year. This increase is driven by a variety of tourism options, ranging from historical and cultural sites to recreational activities that are educational.

Meanwhile, Bali, which previously ranked first, is now in second place. Bandung is in third place with an increase in searches of around 22 percent compared to last year.

The city of Bandung is considered to have its own appeal for family tourists thanks to the cool air, culinary wealth, and the many outdoor activities that can be enjoyed with children.

Jakarta and Malang complete the top five domestic family vacation destinations, ranking fourth and fifth respectively based on search data during the year-end holiday period.

"Traveling is now not just visiting destinations, but also creating memories together in places like Yogyakarta and Bandung, which are increasingly in demand towards the end of the year," said Gede Gunawan.

For overseas travel, search data shows that Singapore is the favorite destination for Indonesian families. The country is in demand because it offers a variety of family-friendly activities with easy transportation access.

Tokyo is ranked second as a foreign family tourist destination. The city attracts tourists thanks to a blend of traditional culture and modern attractions, including world-class theme parks such as Tokyo Disneyland.

The third position is occupied by Kuala Lumpur which is considered easy to reach and has many family tourism options. Bangkok followed in fourth place with advantages in the entertainment, culinary, and shopping sectors.

Shanghai this year entered the list of the top five favorite destinations, replacing Hong Kong. The city recorded the highest spike in interest compared to other destinations, with a search increase of 130 percent.

"Internationally, the increasing interest in cities such as Singapore and Shanghai reflects the desire to explore diverse experiences," said Gede.
