Christmas Full of Sorrow, Police Jack Bondi Beach Sydney Shooting Victim Returns Home
A young police officer who was shot in the head during a gun attack on Bondi Beach has been allowed home from hospital.
Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, a 22-year-old police officer who had only been on the job for four months, was injured while providing security for a Hanukkah event when two gunmen opened fire.
In the incident, more than 40 people were reported injured and at least 15 people were killed.
Hibbert suffered gunshot wounds to the head and shoulder. As a result of the injury, he lost sight in one of his eyes. However, his condition is now gradually improving and he is recovering at home.
"We as a family couldn't ask for more than this. Being able to bring Jack home, especially leading up to Christmas, really feels like a miracle," the Hibbert family said, quoted by the BBC, Tuesday, December 23.
The family also expressed gratitude for the broad support from the community and appreciated the medical staff who provided intensive care while Hibbert was hospitalized.
"Even though he is at home, Jack is still in recovery and needs space, support, and positive prayers," the statement continued.
The family previously revealed that despite being shot, Hibbert still tried to help the event participants until his condition was no longer possible.
Fellow police officers who were at the scene also testified to Hibbert's bravery.
"They portray Jack moving closer to people in need, not away from danger," the family said.
Hibbert is one of two police officers injured in the attack. Another policeman, Constable Scott Dyson (25), is still undergoing treatment in hospital as of the last update.
