Flood Victims Of Sembakung, North Kalimantan Refuse To Be Evacuated, Officers Remind Beware Of Rising Water And Wild Beasts
JAKARTA - During the flood that inundated Sembakung District, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan (Kaltara) since May 20, 2021, the affected residents refused to be evacuated to higher or safer places on the grounds that they had to protect their belongings.
As reported by Antara, Thursday, May 27, the Head of the Disaster Preparedness Village (KSB), Sembakung Abdullah Subdistrict, confirmed that hundreds of families (KK) who were flooded still refused to be evacuated.
In fact, he said, the Nunukan Regency Government had provided dozens of special emergency tents for residents who were victims of this flood which were set up in a safer location.
"Hundreds of families affected by the flood refused to be evacuated to emergency tents," Abdullah said.

Residents in 8 villages, Sembakung Subdistrict, which were flooded chose to stay in their houses, even though floodwaters had entered the area of the house with a height of up to one meter.
Abdullah stated that residents stay in their homes by making higher rest areas in their homes to secure their families and belongings.
The water level has reached 4.95 meters and is expected to continue to increase, considering that in the region of Sabah, Malaysia, which is the upstream of the Sembakung River, it is still raining.
The eight villages in Sembakung District that were affected by the flood were Butas Bagu, Lubak, Pagar, Tanjung (Kampung Lama), Manuk Bungkul, Atap, Lubakan and Tagul.
According to Abdullah, the data on water conditions in the sub-district was on Thursday, May 27 at 12.00 central Indonesia time.
Efforts to maintain security for residents who choose to stay in their homes, officers from disaster volunteers together with police and TNI officers conduct patrols and urge residents to remain vigilant if the water rises at any time and protect themselves from wild animals.
