Krapyak Toll Tragedy: 16 Passengers Died, Two Bus Drivers Intensively Investigated

SEMARANG - The police have secured two drivers of the PO Cahaya Trans bus involved in a fatal accident at the Krapyak Toll Exit Junction, Semarang City, Central Java. The two drivers are currently undergoing intensive examination to reveal the exact cause of the accident that killed dozens of passengers.

Head of Public Relations of Central Java Police, Kombes Artanto said that the investigation was still being carried out by the police. The process includes examining witnesses, drivers, and carrying out the scene of the crime (TKP).

"For now, the investigation is still in process from the police, especially from the Satlantas Unit of Polrestabes Semarang. We are still waiting for the results of the examination process and also conducting a crime scene," he explained, at the Kariadi Semarang Hospital, Monday, December 22.

Artanto confirmed that the driver who drove the PO Cahaya Trans bus at the time of the incident was a backup driver. The driver change was made in the middle of the journey before the accident occurred.

"This is a substitute or backup driver, where when departing from Bogor to Yogyakarta, he stopped at Subang to change drivers," he added.

According to the police, security for the two drivers was carried out to facilitate the investigation process, including deepening the physical condition of the driver, working hours, and technical factors of the vehicle. The police emphasized that the handling of this case was carried out professionally and in accordance with applicable legal procedures.

The PO Cahaya Trans bus accident occurred on Monday (22/12/2025) at around 00.30 WIB. The bus with the police number B 7201 IV was known to have departed from Jatiasih, Jakarta, with a destination of Yogyakarta, carrying 34 passengers.

As a result of the accident, 16 people were reported dead, while other passengers were injured with varying degrees of severity. The bus driver, who was a backup driver, was also injured and received medical treatment.

Until now, the police are still investigating the possible causes of the accident, ranging from human negligence, vehicle conditions, to road factors. Further crime scene investigation will be carried out to ensure the full sequence of events.

The case of the PO Cahaya Trans bus accident at the Krapyak Toll Exit has again become a public concern and highlights the importance of strict supervision of public transportation safety, especially regarding driver management and long-distance travel operational standards.
