Seskab Teddy-BMKG Meets to Discuss Weather Modification Options for the End of the Year

JAKARTA - The government is trying to take anticipatory steps in the form of weather modification to suppress the potential for high-intensity rain that is not controlled during the 2025 year-end holiday period.

This was informed by the Cabinet Secretariat (Setkab) based on the results of a meeting between Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Teuku Faisal Fathani at the Cabinet Secretariat Office, Jakarta, Monday.

"One of the discussions is about rainfall forecasts and weather conditions during the year-end holidays," said a statement from the Setkab, quoted by ANTARA, Monday, December 22.

During the meeting, BMKG conveyed the latest monitoring results related to the potential increase in rainfall in a number of areas, as well as the anticipation measures that have been prepared to minimize the risk of hydrometeorological disasters.

In addition, BMKG also pays special attention to the Sumatra region, especially areas that were previously affected by disasters.

"BMKG is preparing anticipatory steps, including weather modification to prevent as much as possible high rainfall that is not controlled in Sumatra, especially the disaster-affected areas," he said.

Weather monitoring is carried out intensively as part of mitigation efforts to support public safety during the year-end holiday period.

Ahead of the new year, most of Indonesia entered the peak period of the rainy season. BMKG predicts a significant potential for extreme weather from December 22, 2025 to early January 2026.

This condition is triggered by the active global atmospheric phenomenon and the emergence of cyclone seeds which increase the intensity of heavy rain, hail and strong winds.

Strategic areas such as Java, Sumatra, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara are predicted to experience high rainfall that risks triggering puddles or flooding on the homecoming route and tourist locations.
