Bondi Beach Shooter Revealed to Have Thrown Pipe Bomb to Tennis Ball Bomb During Attack
JAKARTA - Naveed Akram, the young man who shot 15 people on Bondi Beach, Sydney, was revealed to have been training with a firearm in an area in the state of New South Wales outside Sydney with his father. The perpetrator also threw a homemade bomb.
Australian police documents released on Monday, December 22, revealed the two gunmen filmed a video about their justification for the planned attack.
Naveed Akram appeared via video link in court on Monday from a Sydney hospital where he is being treated for a stomach injury.
Officers shot Akram at the scene of the shooting on December 14 and killed his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram.
The government of the state of New South Wales confirmed that Naveed Akram was transferred on Monday from the hospital to prison. Neither the hospital nor the prison were named by the authorities.
The statement accused the 24-year-old and his father of starting their attack by throwing four explosive devices at a crowd celebrating an annual Jewish event on Bondi Beach, but the devices failed to explode.
Police described the devices as three aluminum pipe bombs and a tennis ball bomb containing explosives, gunpowder, and steel ball bearings.
No one was injured, but police described it as an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) that was "potentially active".
Authorities have charged Akram with 59 offenses including 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of causing injury with intent to kill related to the injured victims, and one count of terrorism.
The anti-Semitic attack at the start of the eight-day Hanukkah festival was Australia's worst mass shooting since a lone gunman killed 35 people in the state of Tasmania in 1996.
The New South Wales government introduced a bill to Parliament on Monday that Prime Minister Chris Minns said would be the strictest in Australia.
The new restrictions will include making Australian citizenship a requirement for obtaining a firearms license.
This will exclude Sajid Akram, who is an Indian citizen with a permanent resident visa.
