First Aid to Overcome Tooth and Gum Pain

JAKARTA - Teeth and gums that feel painful due to inflammation often occur in many people. This condition is disturbing, because it causes discomfort when eating, drinking, or talking.

To overcome it, not everyone can immediately see a doctor, especially if it happens at night. Thus, first aid is very important to know to overcome it for a while.

Professor of Periodontology from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Padjajaran, Prof. Dr. Amaliya, drg, M.Sc, Ph.D, said there are some simple things that can be done to relieve temporary tooth and gum inflammation.

The simple way is to gargle with water that has been mixed with salt. If it is not effective, then you can gargle with boiled water from betel leaves.

"There are some simple things we can do at home. First, if you feel there is inflammation in your gums or teeth are a little numb, you can gargle with salt water," said Amaliya, when met in Cipete, written on Monday, December 22, 2025.

If the first aid is done at night and the pain in the teeth and gums subsides, it does not mean that the problem has been resolved properly. You still have to see a doctor the next day.

"Sometimes tomorrow morning 'oh, don't go to the doctor, because it's not sick anymore'. It's better to consult a dentist," he said.

Consultations must still be carried out because only dentists can find out the cause of the pain in your teeth and gums. By knowing the exact cause, the treatment will be easier and faster.

In addition, Amaliya also reminded the public to regularly check their teeth at least once or twice a year. With this regular examination, we can find out the health condition of our teeth and prevent problems from occurring.

"Even in good health, we still have to check ourselves to the dentist. At least once a year or twice. So, if there is a mild disease, it can be immediately treated so that it does not get worse or get sick than before," concluded Amaliya.
