Malaysia ASEAN 2025 Chair Urges Lowering Intensity of Cambodia-Thailand War

JAKARTA - Malaysian Foreign Minister (Menlu) Mohamad Hasan revealed that ASEAN must do whatever it takes to maintain regional peace and stability.

Speaking as the Chair of ASEAN 2025, he emphasized that efforts to address the Cambodia-Thailand situation must go beyond merely de-escalating tensions.

"Our goal is to go beyond de-escalation of tensions," Mohamad said in his opening remarks at an ASEAN foreign ministers' special meeting discussing the "Current Situation between Thailand and Cambodia" in Kuala Lumpur, Monday, December 22, quoted from Bernama.

Mohamad said the regional group must increase confidence-building among the parties and ensure dialogue continues despite existing differences.

He noted that regional stability remained a shared responsibility for all member countries.

The ASEAN approach must be guided by lessons from the past, based on wisdom, solidarity, and trust.

These principles have enabled the region to successfully navigate previous periods of upheaval.

"We must increase confidence-building among conflicting parties and provide a scope for dialogue despite the existing differences," he said.
