33 Million People in Sudan Need Food Aid and Humanitarian Support

JAKARTA - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that as many as 33 million people in Sudan need food assistance and other humanitarian support.

The WFP last week announced it would start reducing food aid rations for Sudanese who are at risk of starvation due to a lack of funding.

Reported by WAFA-OANA, Monday, December 22, the reduction is planned to take effect in January 2026. Meanwhile, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) stated that around 14 million school-age children in Sudan are currently not in school.

In a report, UNICEF said the education crisis in Sudan is still at a very serious level.

Of the approximately 17 million school-age children, an estimated 14 million are not attending school, particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions.

UNICEF stressed that around 62 percent of its response plan worth 1 billion US dollars (around Rp16.7 trillion) has still not received funding.

The funds are needed to provide assistance in the fields of child protection, education, health, nutrition, clean water, sanitation, and cash assistance.

The organization is targeting support for 13.1 million people, including 8.7 million children in various countries.

The report also noted that Sudan is facing an outbreak of disease, food insecurity, and widespread flooding that are further exacerbating the humanitarian situation in the country.
