Duren Sawit Residents Dismantle Fence Covering Waste Disposal Land
Hundreds of residents of RW 013 Pondok Kelapa Village carried out the forced demolition of a zinc fence that closed the Temporary Waste Disposal Site (TPS) in Duren Sawit District, East Jakarta.
The forced demolition was triggered by the residents' disappointment because they could not throw away garbage at the TPS which had been used together for decades.
The anger of the residents was also triggered by a group of unknown people closing the TPS.
Siswo Harsono, a resident of RW 013 Pondok Kelapa, explained that the problem of land reclamation for the TPS had actually been going on for a long time.
"This land has been used by residents as a polling station for more than 30 years. But it was fenced again by the party who claimed to be the owner. This is the second time," he said when confirmed, Monday, December 22.
According to him, the fence made the residents' garbage pile up and caused environmental hygiene disorders.
Residents along with RW managers and community leaders had tried to negotiate to have the fence partially dismantled.
"Residents have tried to negotiate so that it is dismantled by the owner, but they refused. Tomorrow's deliberation is promised, while the garbage cannot be postponed," he said.
Siswo said the village administration had offered another alternative TPS.
However, the capacity of the location is considered inadequate to accommodate the waste of residents of RW 013, which is quite a lot.
"The hope of the TPS residents is that it can still function," he said.
