Mass Shooting at South African Liquor Store, 10 Dead and 10 Wounded
JAKARTA - A shooting occurred at a drinking establishment in the Bekkersdal area, west of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday, December 21 at night local time. The incident killed at least 10 people and injured 10 others.
National television SABC News reported that the attack took place at the KwaNoxolo Drinking Shop, Tambo area. The perpetrator allegedly fired blindly at visitors inside the shop, as well as residents outside the location.
The local police confirmed that the number of fatalities reached 10 people. Meanwhile, the injured victims were immediately evacuated to a number of nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Security forces are still maintaining tight security around the scene of the incident as the investigation continues. Acting Commissioner of the Gauteng Police, Fred Kekana, said various police units had been deployed to investigate the incident.
"We are still busy collecting statements from witnesses, while the national team for criminal cases has arrived," said Kekana, as reported by Antara.
He added that a number of special units were also involved in handling the case. "So was the team of investigators at the provincial level and the local criminal history data center," he said.
In addition, officers from the extraordinary crime unit, criminal intelligence, and provincial crime detectives have also been at the scene to accelerate the process of uncovering the case.
Until now, the police have not revealed the identity of the perpetrator or the motive behind the shooting. The investigation is still ongoing.
