DuckDuckGo Launches Privacy-Based AI Image Generator
DuckDuckGo has officially launched its latest artificial intelligence (AI) image-making tool that prioritizes user privacy protection. This new feature comes amid the proliferation of technology companies releasing AI image generation services, but DuckDuckGo is trying to stand out with its privacy-first approach that is its hallmark.
This AI image generator can be accessed through the duck.ai website. Users simply select the "New Image" menu in the side panel, then enter the desired image description or prompt. The way it works is similar to other AI image generators that have already been present in the market.
As a company known for a privacy-focused search engine, DuckDuckGo applies the same principle to its latest AI service. All prompts entered by users will be anonymized.
The company also confirmed that user data will not be used to train the underlying AI model. However, DuckDuckGo revealed that this image generation technology is powered by a model from OpenAI.
In addition, the resulting images are not stored on the DuckDuckGo server, but are stored locally on the user's device. The images are also equipped with metadata that complies with the C2PA standard, so they can be verified as AI-generated content.
In terms of cost, DuckDuckGo states that this AI image generator can be used for free with certain daily usage limits. Users who subscribe to DuckDuckGo's paid service will get higher usage quotas.
Despite offering advantages in terms of privacy, DuckDuckGo still has to compete with big players in the AI industry. Google has its own image-making tool that is considered very sophisticated, while OpenAI has recently also improved its image generation capabilities in ChatGPT to be faster and more accurate in following user commands.
With increasingly fierce competition, DuckDuckGo's AI image generator is likely to attract the interest of users who prioritize privacy and do not want their personal data to be used in the development process of AI technology.
