Apple Watch Hypertension Notification Feature Soon Available in Australia
JAKARTA - Apple Watch users in Australia will soon be able to take advantage of the hypertension notification feature, after the country's health authorities gave official approval. However, Apple has not announced a specific date for the launch of the feature.
The detection feature of hypertension on the Apple Watch was first introduced in September 2025. Through this feature, the Apple Watch can monitor indications of high blood pressure and provide alerts to users to immediately seek medical treatment. However, activation of the feature must first be done through a connected iPhone.
According to the Information Age report, Australia's medical regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), has officially approved the feature. With this approval, the Apple Watch has also been listed as a medical device in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).
Heart Foundation Australia medical officer in chief Professor Garry Jennings welcomed the move. He assessed the TGA's approval as a positive development in efforts to increase public awareness of high blood pressure.
"This approach is not a single solution for hypertension, but it can help raise awareness among some people about high blood pressure," said Professor Jennings. He added that health technologies like this encourage people to be more active in monitoring the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other complications due to hypertension early on.
Even though it has received the green light from regulators, the TGA's approval does not mean that the feature can be used immediately. This means that Apple is now legally allowed to activate the feature in Australia, but the decision on the launch time is entirely in the hands of Apple Australia, which has not yet made an official statement.
More than 150 countries have already approved the Apple Watch hypertension notification feature, with Canada being the latest country to give approval in October 2025. In most countries, Apple is known to activate this feature shortly after the regulator's approval is published, so it is likely that a similar feature will soon be available in Australia.
Apple is expected to enable this feature in conjunction with the next watchOS operating system update. The last watchOS update was released on December 12, 2025, which included a number of adjustments, including changes to Wi-Fi in accordance with EU regulations.
Currently, Apple's online Australian Store does not display any promotions related to the hypertension notification feature, and Apple's support documentation does not list Australia as a country that supports the feature.
