SEA Games 2025 Thailand: Indonesia Successfully Ended a 30-Year Bad Record

JAKARTA - The Indonesian contingent managed to close the 2025 SEA Games in second place. This achievement ended the bad record of never finishing in that position for 30 years when participating as a guest team.

The series of races of the biennial multi-branch sports festival officially ended on Saturday, December 20, 2025. Indonesia closed the journey with the achievement of 91 gold medals, 112 silver, and 131 bronze.

Indonesia last finished in second place when they were a guest team was in the 1995 edition which took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand. After that, Indonesia became the overall champion twice (1997 and 2011), but they were all hosts.

Outside of its status as host since 1995, Indonesia has never competed in the top two positions. During that period, Indonesia's best achievement was to take third place.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia), Raja Sapta Oktohari, expressed high appreciation for the struggle of all members of the contingent which resulted in a historic result.

"Thank you to the athletes, coaches, officials, sports federations, as well as the support of the government and all Indonesian people," said Okto in an official statement received by VOI.

In addition to being able to end the bad record when playing as a guest team, the 91 gold medals this year also made Indonesia successfully pass the target of 80 gold medals and the third ranking set at the beginning.

During their stay in Thailand, several sports performed so well to record themselves as the largest contributors to the Indonesian team, namely athletics (nine gold, five silver, six bronze), shooting (six gold, nine silver, eight bronze), and archery (six gold, two silver).

Shooting is the most medal-winning sport with a total of 23 medals, followed by athletics (20 medals), then pencak silat (12 medals), and swimming and cycling with 11 medals each.

In addition, many sports also managed to become overall champions, namely archery (six gold, two bronze), wushu (five gold, three silver, one bronze), rowing (seven gold, 10 silver, seven bronze), pencak silat (four gold, one silver, seven bronze), badminton (three gold, three silver, four peruggu) and triathlon (eight gold, three silver, one bronze).

Historical records were also engraved in the ice hockey, 3x3 basketball, petanque, kabbadi, and futsal male sports branches, which for the first time in the history of the SEA Games managed to present gold medals for the Indonesian team.
