Indonesia Locks Second Position at 2025 SEA Games Thailand

JAKARTA - The Indonesian contingent is certain to lock in second place in the final standings of the 2025 SEA Games medal tally in Thailand after successfully surpassing the target set.

Indonesia currently has a total of 91 gold medals and still has the opportunity to add two more gold. Meanwhile, Vietnam, which is in third place, now has 86 gold and only has the opportunity to add three gold.

The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Erick Thohir explained that if Indonesia fails to add gold and instead Vietnam sweeps away all remaining gold opportunities, Indonesia cannot be chased.

"If Vietnam wins the three gold medals, their total gold medals will be 89, while Indonesia already has 91 gold medals. Thus, Indonesia's position as runner-up can be ascertained," said Erick in his statement.

The position as runner-up of the SEA Games is a new history for Indonesia when participating in the biennial event as a guest team. The last time Indonesia was able to lock in the second position as a guest team was in the 1995 edition, which also took place in Thailand.

"In previous SEA Games, especially when Indonesia was not the host, Indonesia's position was on average in the third or fourth position," said Erick.

Completing the fight in second place also means Indonesia has succeeded in surpassing the initial target. Indonesia departed for Thailand with 1,021 athletes and targeted the acquisition of 80 gold medals and finishing in third place.

In addition to making history, the number of gold medals also surpassed the achievements of the previous edition in Cambodia in 2023. At that time, Indonesia brought home 87 gold medals.
