DPR asks the government to immediately find safe relocation land for victims of the Sumatra disaster

Member of Commission V of the DPR, Ruslan Daud, asked the central government to immediately prepare a land acquisition scheme for relocation for residents affected by floods and landslides in Sumatra.

He assessed that relocating to a safer area was an important step for the safety and sustainability of people's lives.

"Residents cannot continue to live in areas with high disaster risk levels. Therefore, the state needs to be present by finding safe land for the construction of houses for affected people," Ruslan told reporters, Friday, December 19.

The PKB legislator from the Aceh District explained that the impact of the disaster not only caused damage to houses, but also made some residents lose land and sources of livelihood.

According to Ruslan, this condition puts the community in a position that is completely dependent on the presence of the state.

Therefore, Ruslan encouraged the central government to immediately discuss a serious handling scheme, including the possibility of budgeting for land procurement before the construction of houses is carried out. He assessed that the scheme was important to provide certainty of residence for disaster victims.

"Relocation cannot be delayed if a region is considered vulnerable and dangerous to the safety of the population," he said.

Ruslan also emphasized that post-disaster handling must be carried out in accordance with the President's instructions and through cross-ministerial coordination and related partners. According to him, in addition to housing issues, damage to supporting infrastructure due to disasters, especially dams, must be immediately given attention.

"The sustainability of the dam is very important for the fate of farmers and food security in the region. So this need must also be thought about from now on," he said.

"In addition to damage to supporting infrastructure due to disasters, especially dams: Former Bireun Regent emphasized that handling dams is the responsibility of the central government through the state budget. For this reason, he invited the working partners of Commission V of the DPR RI to directly review the conditions on the ground to determine a quick and appropriate handling scheme so that agricultural activities are not disrupted due to disasters.

"In the near future, we will invite the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Settlements, to the Ministry of Villages to go directly to the disaster site so that we can have a common understanding of the priority needs of infrastructure that must be met for disaster victims," said Ruslan.
