Honda Halts Car Production due to Semiconductor Crisis
JAKARTA - Honda Motor took an unusual step by temporarily suspending vehicle production at its joint venture factory GAC Honda in China starting from the end of December. This is due to a shortage of semiconductor supplies.
According to a report by InvestingLive, which was reported by Carnewschina, Friday, December 19, all GAC Honda vehicle manufacturing facilities in China will completely stop production from December 29 to January 2, 2026. During those five days, all production lines will stop completely.
Honda said the lack of semiconductors that has not recovered is the main cause of the suspension. Although there was hope for an improvement in chip supply, the latest situation proved the opposite.
The supply chain is still fragile and has not been able to support production needs consistently without interruption. In 2024, Honda produced around 816,597 vehicles in China, about 22 percent of total global production.
Sales also recorded more than 850,000 units in the market which is the center of production and the core market for Honda. This figure shows how crucial the role of China is in the company's business strategy.
This decision to stop is a blowback against Honda's previous projections. The car manufacturer was optimistic that production would return to normal by the end of November. However, the reality of the supply chain proved that the chip-related obstacles were far from being completed.
Negative sentiment immediately spread to the stock market. Honda's share price on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell about 1.5 percent on the day this report appeared, reflecting investor concerns about the short-term impact on the company's financial performance.
In addition to China, Honda also plans to temporarily suspend operations at its domestic plants in Japan on January 5 and 6. This step shows the company's efforts to adjust production globally to adjust the increasingly tight supply of components.
The production halt in China adds to a long list of supply chain challenges Honda is facing. Despite signs of recovery in recent months, this situation shows that global supply chain issues, especially semiconductor shortages, are still a major stumbling block for the world's automotive industry.
