Google replaces Pixel Launcher with Google App, Full Screen Experience
Google is quietly changing the way the search bar works in the Pixel Launcher, and this time it's not a bug to blame. Over the past few days, Pixel users have reported that tapping the search bar on the home screen now opens the Google App directly, rather than the typical Pixel Launcher search feature.
This change is confirmed as a deliberate move. The 9to5Google report states that Google does intend to replace the Pixel Launcher search with a full Google App-based search experience. As a result, the search display now appears full screen, similar to the behavior of the Google Search widget on most other Android devices.
Previously, the Pixel Launcher offered a unique search overlay. Users can search the web, apps, local files, and contacts in a single transparent screen that still shows the wallpaper. There are also quick shortcuts to apps such as Clock, Contacts, Settings, Play Store, Wallet, and Pixel Tips, complete with search history and recommendations.
Now, all of that is gone from the main search bar. Although searching for apps is still possible, a number of Pixel Launcher's typical shortcuts are no longer available. The remaining experience is simpler, but also more uniform with other Androids. Pixel is less "exclusive", but more consistent across the ecosystem.
Google confirmed that this change is part of the November 2025 Pixel Feature Drop, which they call an "upgraded home screen search bar". In its official announcement, Google stated that this update makes it easier to access AI Mode, the most advanced artificial intelligence-based search feature, directly from the home screen. The goal is clear: encourage users to go deeper into the AI-based search ecosystem.
Even so, Google still leaves a way for users who miss the old experience. The classic version of the Pixel Launcher search can still be accessed through the search bar at the top of the app drawer. Another option, users can enable the "Swipe up to start search" feature through Home settings and Search settings to feel the old Pixel search again.
In short, this is not an error, but a new direction. Google seems to want to make the Pixel the fastest gateway to the Google App and AI Mode. The Pixel is still a Pixel, but now it's more Google than ever.
