Portugal Better Without Cristiano Ronaldo? Bruno Fernandes Disagree

JAKARTA - Bruno Fernandes insists Cristiano Ronaldo still makes a huge contribution to the national team and disagrees with claims that Portugal play better without the megastar.

When Ronaldo was suspended, Portugal easily beat Armenia in the last 2026 World Cup qualifier last month with a score of 9-1, to secure a place in next year's finals.

"Cristiano in the penalty area remains a very quality player. He attracts the attention of the defender and creates space for other players."

"If Cristiano doesn't play and Goncalo (Ramos) plays, Goncalo (Paris Saint-Germain) is strong in pressing and good in diagonal movements."

"When I don't play and Bernardo (Silva) plays as a number 10, Bernardo gives you more ball possession. I do more final passes."

"Everything is like that. All the players add something and subtract others. Cristiano is the same as us. We have to know how to adapt and improve each other's quality so that the national team benefits," said Manchester United captain Fernandes, in an interview with Canal 11, reported by ESPN.

Ronaldo, 40, is the all-time top scorer for the Portugal national team with 143 goals in 226 appearances since his debut in 2003.

His time with Portugal looked to be under threat when he was left out of Fernando Santos' squad for the 2022 World Cup.

However, his goal-scoring form with Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr has allowed Ronaldo to return to Portugal's starting XI under Santos successor Roberto Martinez.

"I know what people think that obviously we play better without Ronaldo, that the players are freer and more flexible."

"I think, if that happens, it's partly our fault. We don't have to worry if Cristiano is on the pitch because Cristiano can give us something," said Fernandes.

Portugal, who beat Spain to win the UEFA Nations League title this summer, have high hopes ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

They qualified with four wins and only one defeat. Portugal scored 20 goals, five of which were scored by Ronaldo, and only conceded seven goals in six matches.

"I want to play in the 2026 World Cup, but if I have to be on the bench to make us champions, I'll accept it twice," Fernandes said.

The 31-year-old has high hopes ahead of his third World Cup. This will also be Ronaldo's last chance to lift the only major trophy he has not won in his illustrious career.

"We dream of winning the World Cup and that responsibility is positive. We have to unite as a team and find out where we need to improve ourselves, as well as understand that the World Cup will not be perfect."

"I know we are ready to run a great campaign that will bring honor to the country," said the Manchester United captain.
