How to Avoid Pride and His Prayer

YOGYAKARTA - In the teachings of Islam, arrogance is one of the diseases of the heart that must be avoided. This trait has a bad impact because it can affect a person's behavior, even leading to reprehensible and sinful deeds. How to avoid the arrogant nature is actually very easy, one of which is by praying.

How to Avoid Arrogance​

In a scientific work entitled "How to Diagnose the Diseases of Ujub and Takabur" written by Ulfa Dj. Nurkamiden (Journal of Islamic Education Management Tadbir: 2016), it is explained that takabur is proud. The owner of the takabur trait will usually consider himself superior to others.

Admiration for oneself arises because of the arrogant and arrogant nature possessed. The existence of this despicable trait then looks down on others. No wonder if the arrogant nature is one of the things that are hated in Islam.

In the eyes of Islam, there are many ways that can be done to avoid the arrogant nature, namely as follows.

Apply the trait of humility

Humility is a commendable trait that can save a person from arrogance. A person who has a humble nature realizes that all the goodness, excellence, or intelligence he has does not make him a great person. This trait emphasizes on oneself to remain simple and choose to avoid arrogance.

Realize that everything is a gift from God

Arrogance often arises because someone believes that the achievements they have are the result of their own greatness. To avoid this arrogant attitude, always plant in yourself that all achievements are a gift from Allah SWT. Also realize that without His permission, we will get nothing.

Self-introspection

Introspection is a commendable act. This act is done to find the weaknesses and flaws in oneself. A person who is good at introspection will be more humble. Usually the person is more ashamed to be arrogant.

Don't look down on others.

Looking down on others can be done by anyone. This behavior comes from a proud nature that leads to arrogant behavior. Basically talking about the bad qualities of others is a reprehensible act, especially if the act is done to humiliate fellow human beings.

Always learn to be wiser.

Wisdom can come from the process of learning without haste. Learning helps increase one's degree while cultivating one's wise nature.

Prayer to Avoid Pride​

"O Allah, make me patient, make me grateful, make me small in my eyes, and big in the eyes of people."

Allāhumma ja‘alnī ṣabūran,wa‑ja‘alnī syākūran,wa‑ja‘alnī fī ‘aynī ṣaghīran,wa‑fī a‘yūni al‑nāsi kabīran.

This means:

"Ya Allah, make me a person who is good at accepting your trials, be grateful to you. Ya Allah, make me small in my own eyes, but big in the eyes of others."
