DKI Provincial Government Strengthens Preparedness to Face Extreme Weather at the End of the Year

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has begun to prepare mitigation steps to face the rainy season and potential extreme weather at the end of the year, which coincides with the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Preparedness is focused on strengthening cross-regional coordination and the use of disaster data.

Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno said that one of the steps that was taken again was the implementation of weather modification operations (OMC). Rano hopes that the buffer areas of Jakarta which are in the Jabodetabek agglomeration area will also do the same thing.

"For weather modification operations in anticipation of heavy rainfall, according to the Governor's instructions, this step is not only carried out in the Jakarta area, but must also be coordinated with the buffer area around Jakarta," said Rano at the DKI Jakarta City Hall, Wednesday, December 17.

In addition to OMC, the DKI Provincial Government will also strengthen the early warning system. The threat of flooding does not only come from local rain, but also flood shipments from upstream areas as well as tidal floods in the coastal areas north of Jakarta.

Rano asked all levels to ensure that basic services and food availability are maintained in various disaster scenarios, including during the long holiday momentum at the end of the year.

"We certainly have annual agendas such as Christmas and New Year. However, at this time there is the potential for extreme weather, including the presence of several cyclones in the Indonesian region. Therefore, data from BMKG, Pushidrosal, and related agencies are very important so that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government can take the right anticipatory steps," said Rano.

In terms of flood control, the DKI Provincial Government has activated 612 stationary pumps at various pumping stations and 590 mobile pumps ready to be moved to flood-prone areas.

The Water Resources Service (SDA) has also carried out normalization and maintenance of macro and micro channels, including dredging river sediments and checking the function of floodgates.

For coastal areas, a number of flood mitigation embankments in North Jakarta have been strengthened. The operation of the polder system and water gates will also be intensified during the maximum tide period.

For information, based on the forecast of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Jakarta and surrounding areas in Dasarian II and III December 2025 are estimated to experience rainfall of 50-150 millimeters. The peak of the rain is predicted to occur in Dasarian I January 2026, with the potential for 150-200 millimeters of rain in most of the Jakarta area.

The South Bogor area as an upstream area is even estimated to record higher rainfall, reaching 200-300 millimeters in the first ten days of January 2026. This condition is considered potentially increasing the risk of upstream flooding to downstream areas, including Jakarta.
