Jakarta Potentially Hit by Strong Winds until December 21, Pramono: We Anticipate
JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung claims that the DKI Provincial Government has prepared for the potential of strong winds in Jakarta in the next few days.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that strong winds will hit Jakarta until December 21, 1015.
"Jakarta has prepared itself, anticipated, including if later it is as predicted by BMKG there will be tornadoes and so on," said Pramono in Cilincing, North Jakarta, Tuesday, December 16.
One of the impacts that need to be aware of from the phenomenon of strong winds in Jakarta is the falling of trees. In recent times, trees have often fallen in a number of areas during heavy rain accompanied by strong winds.
However, Pramono emphasized that the DKI Provincial Government had searched for the planting and burning of 65 thousand trees, especially those that were old and almost rotten. However, Pramono realized that it could not completely prevent hydrometeorological disasters.
"Actually, almost in all areas it has been done (tree fires), but sometimes it is not enough. And we don't know that the tornado that was yesterday could be in Ancol, then also in Sunda Kelapa, we don't know that the direction is there," said Pramono.
Previously, the BMKG stated that the strong winds that hit Jakarta and its surroundings were part of an extreme weather phenomenon at the peak of the rainy season. This condition is expected to continue at least until December 21, 2025.
BMKG Meteorology Deputy Guswanto said that December was the most active period for the formation of extreme weather in the western region of Indonesia, including Jabodetabek. The combination of heavy rain, convective clouds, and air pressure differences is the main trigger for strong winds.
"Strong winds in Jakarta today are part of an extreme weather phenomenon at the peak of the rainy season. Based on BMKG forecasts, this condition is still potentially in place until around December 21, 2025," Guswanto told reporters.

BMKG predicts that heavy rain accompanied by strong winds will still occur in the Jabodetabek area in the next few days. This situation has the potential to cause disruption to residents' activities to the risk of hydrometeorological disasters.
BMKG noted that in the period from December 14-16, 2025, the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds has been detected in a number of areas in Jabodetabek. The impact is starting to be felt on the ground, ranging from fallen trees to disruptions in coastal community activities.
According to BMKG, West Java, including the Jabodetabek area, currently records higher frequencies of extreme rain and strong winds than other regions in Indonesia. This condition increases the risk of hydrometeorological disasters.
"There is a risk of hydrometeorological hazards that need to be considered. Strong winds can cause trees to fall, minor damage to buildings, and disrupt transportation activities," he said.
BMKG reminded a number of regions to increase vigilance, especially areas with large trees, open power lines, and coastal areas north of Jakarta such as Marunda and Cilincing.
BMKG estimates that wind intensity will begin to decrease after mid-December. However, the potential for heavy rain and local winds can still occur until the end of the month, especially before Christmas and New Year celebrations.
