Private Jet Crashes in Mexico, 7 Dead

JAKARTA - A small plane crashed in central Mexico while attempting an emergency landing, killing seven people.

The Mexican State Civil Protection Coordinator, Adrián Hernández, explained that the accident occurred in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area three miles (5 kilometers) from Toluca airport, about 31 miles (50 kilometers) west of Mexico City.

The plane took off from Acapulco, along Mexico's Pacific coast.

Hernández said the private jet was carrying eight passengers and two crew members, but hours after the crash only seven bodies were found.

He said the plane appeared to have tried to land on a football pitch but crashed into a nearby metal roof, causing a massive fire. The crash is under investigation.

The mayor of San Mateo Atenco, Ana Muñiz, told Milenio Television that the fire forced the evacuation of about 130 people in the area.
