Two Cyclone Seed Triggers High Sea Waves in South Java and Papua
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that two tropical cyclone seeds observed in the southern area of East Java and Papua waters have the potential to trigger high waves in a number of Indonesian waters on December 16-19, 2025.

BMKG Maritime Meteorology Director Eko Prasetyo said that Tropical Cyclone 93S was observed in the Indian Ocean south of East Java, while Tropical Cyclone 95S was in the Arafura Sea west of South Papua.

"The existence of these two systems triggers an increase in wind speed and wave height, especially in the waters south of Indonesia and the waters around Papua," he said in Jakarta, Antara, Tuesday, December 16.

According to him, the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves from northwest to northeast with a speed of 8-30 knots, while in the south it moves from southeast to southwest with a speed of 6-30 knots.

BMKG estimates that waves of 1.25 to 2.5 meters are likely to occur in the Indian Ocean south of East Java, the waters south of West Java to East Nusa Tenggara, the Java Sea, the southern Makassar Strait, and a number of waters in the Papua region.

In addition, waves in the same category are also potentially occurring in the northern Malacca Strait, the western waters of Sumatra, the northern Karimata Strait, and the central Arafura Sea.

BMKG also reminded of the potential for very high waves with a height of 2.5 to 4 meters that could occur in the Indian Ocean south of Central Java and the Pacific Ocean north of Maluku.

Eko emphasized that this condition could endanger the safety of navigation, especially for fishing boats, barges, ferries, and large-sized ships.
