Don't Do It, This is Dangerous to Your Teeth If You Chew Ice Stones
JAKARTA - Drinking cold drinks is liked by many people because it is refreshing, especially if ice cubes are added. Some people even like to chew ice cubes to give a better freshness.
However, it is important to note that chewing ice is not recommended by dentists. This is because this habit can have a negative impact on dental health.
"A lot of people don't think about it, but they're chewing ice in their drinks and they don't think about the damage it can cause," clinical professor of dentistry, Dr. Natalie Peterson, quoted from Huffpost, on Monday, December 15, 2025.
The habit of chewing ice cubes can damage the enamel or email teeth. This is because the hard ice cubes gradually erode the outer protective layer of the teeth, making the teeth prone to cavities and sensitive.
The risk of cracked and broken teeth can also occur due to chewing ice. This happens because the pressure when biting ice can cause microscopic cracks (micro-cracks) or even break it completely, especially if the teeth already have fillings or wires.
Sensitive teeth can also occur by chewing ice cubes, because the damage to the enamel that occurs can reach the dentin layer, which makes the teeth numb when exposed to hot or cold temperatures.
In addition, ice that is chewed and consumed may also be unhygienic, which in the end can carry bacteria that cause diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis.
Gum health can also be threatened by chewing ice. This happens because when chewed, ice can hurt the gums and cause irritation, even infection if it is not clean.
Therefore, chewing ice cubes should not be done and if you already have this habit, you should stop it immediately. Try to find healthier alternatives and consult a dentist if you have trouble stopping it.
