Wakapolri asks the police to be on alert for extreme weather during Christmas and New Year

JAKARTA - Deputy Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Wakapolri) Inspector General Pol Dedi Prasetyo highlighted the potential for extreme rainfall at the end of 2025 to early 2026. This condition is considered to be anticipated because it coincides with the series of Christmas and New Year celebrations (Nataru).

According to Dedi, the prediction of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) shows a significant increase in rainfall during the period from December 29, 2025 to January 10, 2026 in a number of regions in Indonesia.

"The prediction from BMKG shows that rainfall from December 29 to January 10 has increased quite extreme, both in Java, Lampung, Jambi, Bali, NTT, and NTB. This needs to be anticipated," said Wakapolri in his statement, Monday, December 15.

Anticipating the potential for natural disasters is one of the main focuses of the cross-sectoral coordination meeting for the operational field of Operation Lilin 2025 held today. In addition to securing the homecoming route and vital objects, the forum also emphasizes the importance of preparedness for natural disasters during the year-end holiday period.

Wakapolri emphasized the importance of coordination between the police and regional police with the local government and other related stakeholders. He emphasized the readiness of supporting facilities and infrastructure, personnel, and equipment to face potential disasters. "We need to anticipate natural disasters," he said.

Dedi also conveyed that the government is currently still focusing on handling people affected by natural disasters in a number of regions, such as West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh. Efforts to provide assistance and recovery for affected residents, he continued, continue to be carried out on an ongoing basis.

In order to secure Nataru, the National Police also prepared security and service posts to protect 44,226 vital objects, ranging from churches, terminals, ports, airports, to stations. Security also includes shopping centers, tourist attractions, and New Year's Eve 2026 locations.

In addition, the National Police will implement various traffic engineering schemes to anticipate vehicle congestion during the homecoming and return flow. "The National Police is preparing various traffic engineering plans, both for the homecoming and return flow, such as odd even, contraflow, to one way," said Wakapolri.

To support public safety and comfort, the National Police also optimizes the 110 emergency service as a hotline for complaints and reports. This service is prepared to respond to potential security disturbances and emergency conditions experienced by the public, including when stuck in traffic jams.
