Anticipating Bad Weather, KSOP Banten Tightens Permission to Sail Passenger Ships
CILEGON - The Banten Class I City and Port Authority (KSOP) office has tightened the issuance of the Sailing Approval Letter (SPB) for passenger ships to anticipate bad weather and to ensure the safety of navigation during the Christmas and New Year holiday transportation period.

Head of the Banten Class I KSOP Office, Captain Bartho Ari Raharjo, said that the anticipatory step was taken to support the smooth and safe crossing activities in the waters of Banten which are expected to be crowded.

"We ensure that the Sailing Approval Letter is issued shortly before the passenger ship departs. This document is only issued after all maritime and ship safety requirements are met," said Bartho in Cilegon, Antara, Monday, December 15.

In addition to tightening the issuance of SPB, the Banten KSOP also coordinates with port managers regarding the readiness of the ferry fleet. Of the total 79 ferry fleets available on the Merak-Bakauheni route, 57 ships were declared fit for use and ready to serve passengers.

"The details are, 44 ships operate in Merak Port, six ships in Bandar Bakau Jaya Port, five ships in Ciwandan Port, and two ships in the Krakatau Port of Bandar Samudera," said Bartho.

Meanwhile, the remaining fleet that has not been operational consists of 17 ships that are still undergoing repair processes and five ships that have been declared out of operation. Bartho added, the ship that is being repaired can return to the operational line after all stages of repair are completed and declared to meet safety standards.

Through tightening supervision of SPB and the readiness of the fleet, the Banten KSOP hopes that the marine transportation service during the Christmas and New Year holidays can run safely, orderly, and smoothly without any significant incidents.
