West Sumatra is still at the peak of the rainy season, the Governor asks residents to be alert for disasters following
PADANG - West Sumatra (West Sumatra) Governor Mahyeldi reminded residents in his area to remain alert to the potential for further disasters, as rainfall is still high in a number of areas. Mahyeldi said that this condition has the potential to trigger floods and landslides, so that public awareness needs to continue to be improved.
"Rainfall in several areas of West Sumatra is still quite high. We urge the public to be alert to the possibility of subsequent disasters," said Mahyeldi in Padang, Monday, December 15, quoted from Antara.
This appeal is in line with information from the BMKG Minangkabau Padang Pariaman Class II Meteorological Station which states that West Sumatra is still at the peak of the rainy season until the end of 2025.
The Governor asked residents living around river basins, hilly areas, and landslide-prone areas to temporarily evacuate to safer places or to the nearest evacuation post until the weather conditions improve.
This step is considered important to reduce the risk of victims, considering the large post-disaster that occurred at the end of November, a number of rivers were dredged due to debris from flash floods and have not been fully normalized.
"Many rivers are still shallow due to sediment, so it is very easy to overflow when it rains heavily," said Mahyeldi.
He explained that until now the local government was still focusing on using heavy equipment to open access roads in disaster-affected areas, so that river normalization efforts could not be carried out optimally.
Meanwhile, the BMKG has issued an early weather warning for Monday morning with the potential for moderate to heavy rain which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in most of West Sumatra since noon.

BMKG also set the alert status for 11 areas, including the Mentawai Islands Regency, West Pasaman, Pasaman, Agam, Tanah Datar, Padang Pariaman, South Coast, South Solok, Dharmasraya, and Padang Panjang City.
In addition, moderate to heavy rain is expected to begin at 11.00 WIB in Sijunjung Regency, Dharmasraya, and South Solok, and has the potential to spread to other areas such as Solok Regency, Tanah Datar, Lima Puluh Kota, and Dharmasraya.
