Bekasi Regency Builds a Dike on the Banks of the Cikadu River to Prevent Flooding and Landslides

JAKARTA - The Bekasi Regency Government (Pemkab) in West Java, installed a bank embankment of the Cikadu River at the RT 003/014 point of Sukadami Village, South Cikarang District.

This installation is an effort to anticipate preventing flood disasters and landslides at the location.

"The installation of this embankment uses a 211-meter concrete panel with SPS (Schema Precast System) installation," said Head of the Bekasi Regency Water Resources, Road and Construction Department Henri Lincoln in Cikarang, Monday, quoted by Antara.

He stated that the method was designed to make the embankment strong but still flexible considering that these concrete panels are suitable for various soil conditions plus a faster installation time compared to conventional embankments.

Henri admitted that optimizing the function of water flow was the main focus of this project so that the community would be safer from the threat of floods and landslides, even though the completion of the problem should be done comprehensively.

"Mitigation must be carried out thoroughly, including downstream because the water is still being dumped into the Cikarang River," he said.

Bekasi Regent Ade Kuswara Kunang also provided support for this mitigation effort and hoped that the steps taken by the Bekasi Regency Government could provide great benefits for the community.

"So when the Kali Cikadu water comes during the rainy season, it will pass to the residents. Well, we normalize this, we delve into it, we expand it, and we are given a dike to hold the water. Hopefully in the future the flow of the Kali Cikadu will return to normal," he said.

Ade also conveyed that the need for further mitigation of flooding and landslides at this location would be considered in the planning of future budgets.

"Maybe if there are shortcomings, we can estimate it next year or through the Additional Budget (ABT)," he said.

Meanwhile, local resident Zeni Sutendi (40) revealed that this area is a flood-prone area. In 2019, the flood even reached a height of 80 centimeters.

"If it rains heavily and the Cikadu River overflows, the height is at least 30 centimeters," he said.

In addition to flooding, residents are also facing the threat of landslides at certain locations due to the flow of the Cikadu River which turns. If there is no handling, the river flow is feared to continue to erode residents' homes. "Because the position of the water is turning," he said.
