Many Trees Fall, Pramono Admits He Can't Just Cut Down Big Trees in Jakarta

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung responded to the many trees that fell down in heavy rain accompanied by strong winds sweeping Jakarta. In Jakarta there are three types of trees, namely short, medium, and tall. Most of the tall trees are old.

Pramono admitted that the DKI Provincial Government could not arbitrarily cut down old trees and most of them were already fragile even though it was necessary to prevent the occurrence of trees that could potentially endanger residents.

"The problem is, the trees are very tall and most of them have been around for decades. That is the tree that then, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry, I can't mess with it. Including me," said Pramono to reporters, Sunday, December 14.

Pramono explained that the trees serve to improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and pollution in the capital. In addition, the presence of trees in Jakarta can also increase aesthetic function so as not to create a barren atmosphere.

"That's what makes Jakarta cool, green," he said.

Unfortunately, the phenomenon of climate change and extreme weather in Jakarta cannot be denied. The trees fell due to weather anomalies, according to Pramono, not only in Jakarta.

"Now almost the whole world is experiencing the same thing. Even in Italy, in Spain, yesterday in Kuala Lumpur, in Thailand, in Japan, experienced the same process. Indeed, this is a weather anomaly," said Pramono.

Therefore, the DKI Provincial Government is currently following up on the potential for trees to fall by burning and pruning tens of thousands of trees in Jakarta. At least, this can minimize the impact of losses caused by falling trees.

"I don't want to blame weather anomalies. The responsibility of the Jakarta Government is to continue to prepare so that it doesn't happen again. In fact, I have ordered that almost 65,000 trees have been cleaned up," explained Pramono.

For information, Jakarta is often hit by heavy rain and strong winds when entering the rainy season at the end of the year. In the last rain accompanied by wind, namely on Friday, December 12, a total of 13 trees in Jakarta fell.

The dozens of fallen trees hit 1 garbage dump, 1 road access, 2 power cables, 1 workshop roof, and 1 car unit.
