Mikel Arteta asks everyone to stop criticizing Gyokeres
JAKARTA - Mikel Arteta told everyone to stop criticizing Viktor Gyokeres although he admitted that the striker worth 64 million pounds needed to start scoring goals.
Gyokeres has only scored in four of his 17 appearances for Arsenal so far. He was replaced in the 60th minute by Gabriel Jesus who returned to play in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League in the middle of last week.
Arsenal are interested in Gyokeres who scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting CP. However, he only scored six goals for Arteta's team.
His failure to score in the last four matches since returning from a hamstring injury has put his performance under the spotlight ahead of Arsenal's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, December 14, 2025, early morning WIB.
English:
"There is a lot of enthusiasm because we are bringing in a prolific goalscorer who probably has the best statistics in Europe."
"He's a player coming into a different league, the most demanding league in the world, and what happens if he doesn't score for five or six games?"
"That's the only question I have to him. How do you react if you don't score in five or six games? Can you handle it? Then what will happen in the next 100 games?"
"That's what you have to see. The sample is very small. So, leave him alone, let him do what he does best, support him. I'm sure everything will go well," Arteta said about the Swedish player.
Gyokeres' last goal for Arsenal came in a 2-0 win at Burnley before he was sidelined for almost a month with a hamstring injury.
"We have to put him (Gyokeres) in the best condition so that he can explode and realize his potential. Before the injury, he was in good condition."
"It took time because this is a different league with different demands. He didn't have a pre-season and now he's starting to get momentum, but the thing that will open up his potential is goals."
"He needs that for himself, for his confidence, and we will judge his performances based on that as well. It's logical, but he also really wants it," Arteta said.
Arsenal will host Wolves in the hope of extending their lead over Manchester City to five points. Meanwhile, the Citizens will take action a day later against Crystal Palace.
