New Record Claim, Dongfeng Hybrid Engine Efficiency Surpasses Toyota and BYD

JAKARTA - Dongfeng Motor launched the latest Mach 1.5T hybrid gasoline engine which is claimed to have a peak thermal efficiency of 48.09 percent. This figure makes it touted as the first hybrid gasoline engine in China that exceeds the 48 percent threshold.

In addition, the engine successfully obtained the Energy Efficiency Star certification, as reported by Sina, Saturday, December 13. Thermal efficiency is an indicator of how effectively the engine converts fuel energy into mechanical work.

The higher the value, the less energy is wasted. As a result, with this achievement, Dongfeng places Mach 1.5T at the top level in terms of efficiency of gasoline hybrid engines.

To achieve this performance, Dongfeng relies on a series of key technologies, ranging from innovative combustion methods, compression ratios above 15.5, high-energy ignition systems, to a 500 bar pressurized fuel injection system.

All of this is designed to increase efficiency while speeding up the combustion process. This engine is also equipped with special hybrid vehicle components, such as variable geometry turbochargers, valveless design, and electric variable valve timing.

The optimization ensures that the airflow remains smooth throughout the engine's rotation range. Not only that, Dongfeng embeds an integrated electric motor oil pump and thermal spray coating on the cylinder wall, plus more than 10 other technical innovations.

The combination is claimed to be able to significantly reduce mechanical losses, so that a high-efficiency operating range covers more than 50 percent of the engine's working cycle. According to Dongfeng, this breakthrough has a direct impact on increasing fuel efficiency.

Then the efficiency of energy distribution in various driving conditions, from urban traffic to long-distance travel on highways. The company claims that vehicle mileage can increase by about 10 percent in equivalent fuel consumption conditions.

Compared to competitors, the thermal efficiency of Mach 1.5T is above the widely known benchmark. Toyota's Atkinson cycle hybrid engine, such as in the Prius and Dynamic Force family, generally achieves efficiency of around 40-41 percent under optimal conditions.

Meanwhile, the latest hybrid engine from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD is reported to be in the range of 46-46.5 percent. Thus, this Dongfeng engine is said to set a new record for hybrid gasoline engines intended for global mass production.

The presence of Mach 1.5T also enriches the lineup of hybrid drive systems in China, as automotive manufacturers strive to meet increasingly stringent fuel consumption standards and respond to increasing demand for lower-emitting vehicles.
