Meta Performs Largest Sensor Wave, Remove Accounts Related To Abortion And LGBTQ+
JAKARTA Meta, the company that oversees Instagram and Facebook, has reportedly blocked many accounts since October 2025. This action is referred to as the "largest sensor wave" by Meta.
Meta has removed and restricted dozens of accounts of abortion access providers, LGBTQ+ groups, and reproductive health organizations in recent weeks. These blocking efforts were carried out spread across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
There are more than 50 organizations affected worldwide. Although most of the organizations affected are from Europe and the UK, this blocking is also targeting organizations in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Repro Uncensored, a non-profit organization that tracks digital sensors, said it had tracked hundreds of incidents in the past year. Their data shows 210 incidents of account deletion and severe restrictions.
"As far as I'm concerned, this is at least one of the largest sensor waves we've ever seen," said Repro Uncensored executive director Martha Dimitratou, quoted by the Guardian on Friday, December 12.
In this latest cleaning, Meta not only blocks abortion assistance phone services in countries that legalize and ban LGBTQ accounts, but also removes uploads featuring unexplicit nudity cartoon images.

A number of activists accused Meta of being demeaning, non-responsive, and providing vague reasons for account deletion. Women Help Women registered in the Netherlands, a non-profit organization providing abortion information, was also the victim of the blocking.
Kinga Jelinska, Executive Director of Women Help Women, said her account was fully blocked for the first time in 11 years on Facebook. Jelinska stated that the blocking could 'threaten lives' because it could push some women to inappropriate or even dangerous sources.
However, Meta claims that more than half of the accounts tagged by Repro Uncensored have been recovered. Meta says Women Help Women accounts were removed due to errors and have now been restored. The rest, many accounts were deactivated because they violated various policies, including the Policy for Human Exploitation.
