The Utilization Of The Tableware And Glassware Industry Is Still Low Due To The Onslaught Of Imported Products

Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita admits that the level of utilization of the ceramic industry, especially national tableware and glassware, is still low today.

According to him, one of the reasons is because the onslaught of imported products continues to increase.

Throughout 2024, the domestic ceramic tableware industry has an installed capacity of 250,000 tons with utilization of around 52 percent.

"This figure is still low due to the onslaught of ceramic products and imported glass glasses in the domestic market," Agus said as quoted from a written statement, Friday, December 12.

The domestic market share of the ceramic tableware industry has reached 78 percent and this is a fairly good achievement. However, if you pay attention, the consumption rate of ceramics per capita in Indonesia is still considered very low.

"Therefore, the 78 percent figure still needs attention so that more households in the country use ceramic-based products," he said.

In addition, domestic glassware or glass packaging sub-sectors have a production capacity of 740,000 tons per year, with utilization at 51 percent and a domestic market share of around 65 percent.

The performance of the industry export throughout 2024 was also recorded at 97 million US dollars or 128,000 tons (22 percent of total production), with the main destination countries being the Philippines, Brazil and Vietnam.

"However, at the same time we must be aware of penetration and even a surge in imports of similar products in the future," he said.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry continues to strive to present various strategic policies to maintain the business climate and investment in the ceramic tableware and glassware sectors.

This strategic policy includes several steps, namely the application of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) to ceramic products to protect the national industry from floods of imported products that do not meet quality standards, a certain Natural Gas Price (HGBT) policy of 7 US dollars per MMBTU, certification of halal products in accordance with Government Regulation (PP) Number 42 of 2024 and the program to Increase the Use of Domestic Products (P3DN).

Agus revealed that his party received reports that the entry of imported cable products did not have SNI and entered the government table.

"Therefore, we ask all industry players to report any alleged irregularities so that the government, especially the Ministry of Industry, can take action," he added.
