Ciawi-Sukamahi Dam Claimed To Have Big Services Reduce Jakarta Floods
The Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of Public Works (PU) through the River Basin Center (BBWS) said that the Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams in Bogor Regency, West Java, played a major role in reducing flooding in Jakarta.
Head of the Ciliwung River Basin Center (BBWS) of the Ministry of Public Works, David Partonggo Oloan Marpaung, said that with the presence of Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams, it could reduce flooding by around 27 percent, with details of Ciawi Dam around 20.87 percent and Sukamahi Dam around 7.04 percent.
"During the March 2025 flood, the two dams managed to reduce Jakarta floods, whose role the Ciawi Dam played was to reduce 20.87 percent, while Sukamahi Dam reduced flooding by 7 percent," said David while giving a presentation at Ciawi Dam, Bogor Regency, West Java, Thursday, December 11.
From the intensity, the Ciawi Dam can reduce the water discharge to 211.41 cubic meters per second, from the previous 267.17 cubic meters per second.
Meanwhile, the Sukamahi Dam can reduce the water discharge to 6.6 cubic meters per second, from the previous 7.1 cubic meters per second.
"The flood incident in Jakarta in March 2025, if there is no Sukamahi Dam, it will come out in the Ciliwung River as much as 7.1 cubic meters per second. But, with the Sukamahi dam, it is resistant, only 6.6 cubic meters come out per second," he said.
"Meanwhile, at the Ciawi Dam, the incoming water is reduced to 211.41 cubic meters per second. If there is no dam, the water will be carried as much as 267.17 cubic meters per second," he continued.
David added that the role of the Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam is different from dams in Indonesia in general, because the two dams are dry types that are built to reduce the flow of water from upstream to downstream.
"So, this is the function of dry dams. Not then the dams don't work, but the nature of dry dams, yes, as soon as the water will be accommodated, if the discharge exceeds the capacity to enter the floodgates," he explained.
