Preventing Inflation Of Nataru, Pramono Creates A Large Price Cut Mall Discount Competition

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung revealed the unique policy of the DKI Provincial Government to face Christmas and New Year's Day (Nataru) celebrations. The provincial government will hold a competition between shopping centers in Jakarta, where malls are asked to compete to provide the biggest discount.

Pramono promised to provide tax incentives for malls that dared to offer more aggressive discounts.

"To face the new year, Christmas and New Year which will soon be, I will reshuffle all shopping centers to provide a maximum discount. The discount is getting bigger, the tax is getting cheaper," Pramono said at the Innovation Government Award 2025 event in Central Jakarta, Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

Holding Back Inflation Rate

Pramono explained that this step was taken because high shopping activities ahead of Nataru had great potential to trigger price pressure in the capital city. By spurring visits through the discount program, the provincial government hopes that inflation will remain under control.

The governor predicts inflation in Jakarta will be under control until the end of 2025, with a stable trend until November.

"Why did I do that? I'm sure if people come with more discounts, the inflation will be stuck. Inflation in Jakarta we are targeting 2.5 to 2.7 and I'm sure it will be achieved," he said.

Traditional Market Digitization Competition

In addition to the modern retail sector, the DKI Provincial Government has also expanded the concept of racing to traditional markets. The main focus is to encourage the increasing use of digital payment systems as part of the transformation of Jakarta to global cities.

"Whatever digitalization in Jakarta is the main keyword for Jakarta to become a global city and its ranking has increased. So we are reshuffling traditional markets. Now we ask all of them to use digitalization, use QRIS," said Pramono.

The competition approach was chosen to accelerate technology adoption. The assessment of this digitalization competition involves official institutions such as Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK), with participants from large banks.

According to Pramono, the competition mechanism has proven effective. "What happens? When we hold the competition, digitalization in Jakarta will increase by 47 percent," he added, stressing that incentives, competitions, and digitization are the key to keeping the year-end holiday economy busy without triggering a price spike.
