Solok West Sumatra Rocked By An M 4.7 Earthquake, Vibrations Can Be Felt To Padang

JAKARTA - Solok Regency, West Sumatra (West Sumatra), was rocked by a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 4.7 on Wednesday, December 10 at 02.48 WIB. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that this earthquake was a type of shallow earthquake due to Sumani's Sesuature activity.

Head of Padang Panjang Geophysics Station, Suaidi Ahadi, explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was located on land at coordinates 0.99 degrees south latitude and 100.71 degrees east longitude. The exact location is about 18 km southwest of Solok Regency, with a depth of 10 km of the epicenter.

"By paying attention to the location and depth of the epicenter of the earthquake, it was a shallow earthquake due to Sumani's target activities," said Suaidi Ahadi in a written statement, Wednesday morning.

Based on the estimation of the shock map (shakemap), the vibration felt strong in the Solok Regency area with intensity III-IV modified mercy intensity (MMI). On this scale, the vibration felt real by many people inside the house felt as if a truck had passed, and the door or window could sound.

Shocks were also felt in the city of Padang with intensity II-III MMI, where light objects that were hung began to sway. Meanwhile, in Sijunjung and Sawahlunto, the shock was felt weaker, reaching the MMI I-II.

Until this news was compiled, there had been no official report regarding the damage caused by the main earthquake. BMKG also noted that there was one aftershock with a smaller magnitude.

"As of 03.21 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring showed one aftershock at 03.11 WIB with a magnitude of M 2.1," added Suaidi.
