Ministry Of Transportation Checks Landslide Findings In Upstream Watersheds Near Padang And Agam

The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) is monitoring and will investigate the phenomenon of landslides upstream of the river basin (DAS) that affect floods and landslides in the city of Padang and Agam districts.

"It turns out that based on satellite imagery, there was an extraordinary number of avalanches, it was upstream in the Barisa Wildlife Sanctuary. We will check whether one week, two weeks, three weeks before the disaster occurred, how the situation and conditions were enforced and cover the land," said Head of the West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Hartono as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, December 9.

He explained, from the satellite image, it can be seen that it is more than 11 kilometers from the starting landslide point.

"You can imagine with such an area of avalanches, the thrust, the amount of material, what materials are like, what kind of wood you carry," he said.

The Ministry of Transportation through the West Sumatra BKSDA together with the National Police Headquarters itself has taken samples of wood carried to the beach. This step was taken because the upstream river in the conservation area had an effect on the condition of a number of affected locations in Padang City.

In addition, his party has also monitored drones after the floods and landslides in Palembayan, Agam Regency to check upstream conditions that can be a disaster factor coupled with extreme rainfall in the last few days.

"For Agam, the watershed is Cooking Right, it turns out that upstream is approximately 5 to 6 kilometers away, there is a large number of landslides, which is very wide," Hartono explained.

The Upstream Managing Right watershed is located in the Maninjau Nature Reserve, with satellite imagery monitoring showing the condition of the area two weeks earlier in a very good upright situation.

"So we hope that maybe later we will coordinate with the Police Headquarters Team as well as with the Regional Police to carry out an investigation process related to events that cause flash floods," he said.
