Tough Peace Talks, Zelenskyy Kumpul With French, German And British Leaders

JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with French, German and British leaders in London on Monday.

Ukraine's allies in Europe are trying to strengthen Ukraine's position in tough negotiations over US-backed plans to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with Zelenskyy, President Emmanuel Macron, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the British leader's residence in 10 Downing St.

Zelenskyy said on Sunday evening its negotiations with European leaders this week in London and Brussels will focus on long-term security, air defense and funding for Ukraine's war efforts. Leaders are trying to ensure each ceasefire is supported by strong security guarantees, both from Europe and the US, to prevent Russia from attacking again.

US and Ukrainian negotiators completed a three-day negotiations on Saturday aimed at narrowing dissent over the US government's peace proposal.

Zelenskyy said in a post on Telegram, talks had been "substantial". Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov and General Chief of Staff Andrii Hnatov are traveling back to Europe to give a briefing.

One of the important points in the proposal is the proposal for Ukraine to hand over control of its eastern Donbas territory to Russia, which illegally occupies most of it, but not all of its territory.

Ukraine and its European allies strongly reject the idea of handing over the territory.
