The Aceh BKSDA Deploys Four Elephants To Clean The Kayu Debris After The Flood
The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) deployed four tame elephants to clean up wood debris in residential areas in Pidie Jaya Regency, Aceh, which was previously carried by flash floods.
"We have brought four trained elephants, and all of them are from the SHARE PLG (Elephant Training Center)," said Head of KSDA Sigli Region, Aceh, Hadi Sofyan, in Pidie Jaya, Monday, December 8.
The four elephants were named Abu, Mido, Ajis and Noni. Today, the mahots (pawang) took them to clean up wood debris in a residential area of Gampong Meunasah Bie, Meurah Dua District, Pidie Jaya Regency.
The four tame elephants cleaned up wood debris or other after the disaster, the target is a location that cannot be passed by heavy equipment.
"We are targeting cleaning at locations affected by flash floods in Meureudu and Meurah Dua sub-districts, Pidie Jaya Regency," he said.
These elephants will help clean up materials that are stuck in people's homes, especially opening road access to residents' houses that have been buried by floods.
Then, the elephant will also help with any evacuations found at the location, including victims who have not been found. In addition, elephants can also be used to deliver logistics to flood victims in Pidie Jaya.
"For the duration, we will serve for seven days here, the last December 14, 2025," he said.
He explained that the tame elephant that helped carry out this cleaning already had a long experience. Where, the four of them were involved in helping clean up the material during the 2004 Aceh tsunami disaster.
"Based on previous experience, including during the tsunami in Aceh, the presence of elephants was very helpful in cleaning up debris," he said.
Sementara ini mereka hanya fokus membantu penanganan bencana di Pidie Jaya terlebih dahulu, mengingat akses ke kabupaten lainnya belum bisa tembus.
"So far, it has not been in other areas, because we still need surveys and access to other regencies cannot be reached. In the future, if needed, we are ready to help," said Hadi Sofyan.
