KLH Prepares Sanctions Weighting For 49 Areas That Ignore Waste Management Improvements
JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the government would impose sanctions on 49 districts/cities that did not improve waste management, even though previously they had received sanctions for coercion by the government.
Hanif said there was an increase in the performance of waste management nationally, which after being verified was in the range of 24 percent.
"However, there are 49 regencies/cities that do not respond to the government's coercion. For this reason, allow me, on behalf of the law, increase it through the weighting of sanctions and the potential for criminal imposition," said Hanif at the release of aid for the Sumatra flood and the delivery of waste management facilities and infrastructure in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, December 8.
According to Hanif, regional heads and environmental offices from the 49 regencies/cities have also been summoned to provide an explanation regarding the absence of improvement steps in waste management.
In addition, Hanif said there were 38 regencies/cities that currently do not have a final processing place (TPA) for waste. This condition is considered to have increased environmental pollution and will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of Law Number 32 of 2009.
"We also ask for permission, we will enforce Law 32/2009 because its position increases environmental pollution in the community," he said.
The KLH/BPLH will also recall the regional government from the 38 regions to ask for an explanation and affirm the obligation to provide waste management facilities.
Previously, the government had imposed coercion sanctions on regions that were still running open dumping TPA operations. Until now, the fulfillment of repair obligations has only reached 49 percent.
The deadline for implementing improvements will end soon. Sanctions can be lifted if the repairs are complete, while an extension of the implementation time is given if the progress reaches around 40 percent.
