India Reviews Regulations For Forcing Active GPS Services Permanently Against Apple

JAKARTA The Indian government is reviewing the latest controversial proposals. The proposal will force Apple and other mobile phone manufacturers to enable their GPS services permanently.

The proposal was driven by the Association of Indian Cellular Operators (COAI). COAI argues that location data collected through cell tower triangulation is not accurate enough for serious investigation purposes.

They demand that the authorities be given access to meter-level location coordinates that only satellite-assisted GPS can provide. In fact, the GPS on the phone should be selectively activated by its users.

This happens when users open apps that require location or during emergency situations such as help calls. This proposal aims to change the standard practice across devices sold in India.

In addition, COAI has also asked the government to take action regarding pop-up notifications. They urge smartphone manufacturers to disable warnings that appear when network operators try to access user location information.

The rule will remove transparency for users regarding tracking efforts. Apple, together with Google, has officially expressed a strong objection to the proposal. This objection was conveyed through the Indian Mobile & Electronic Association (ICEA) in July.

They warned the government that forcing always-active GPS could be considered a violation of applicable regulations. The tech company argues that such a policy is a violation of user privacy and global security standards.

This permanent activation obligation is also believed to disrupt the balance between law enforcement needs and the basic rights of users. This sparked serious concerns among major technology companies.

This development comes shortly after India lifted a controversial similar directive. Previous directives required all mobile phone manufacturers to install government applications without the option to disable their functions. The previous cancellation of directives occurred after receiving sharp criticism from various parties.
