RI-EU Agrees To Fight Digital Violence Against Women And Children

JAKARTA - The Government of Indonesia and the European Union affirm a joint commitment to stop gender-based violence in the digital space through the Cycling Tour campaign 16 Days of Global Activism Against Gender-Based Digital Violence on Saturday, December 6.

This campaign emphasizes the urgency of creating a secure digital ecosystem amidst the increasing vulnerability of women and children, especially during disasters that are currently happening in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

In the event, Deputy for Coordination for Family Quality Improvement and Population of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Woro Srihastuti Sulistyaningrum, emphasized that the protection of women and children must be strengthened not only in physical space but also digitally.

Every disaster always shows that women and children are the most vulnerable groups, not only against physical violence, but also digital violence. In crisis situations, the risk of exploitation, bullying, and harassment increases, including in online space," Lisa said in a statement.

Lisa emphasized that the government is currently strengthening the National Movement for Violence Against Women and Children, including aspects of protection in the digital realm, along with ministries/agencies, local governments, business worlds, educational institutions, communities, and international partners.

The Ambassador of the European Union to Indonesia, Denis Chaibi, also emphasized the importance of cross-border solidarity in dealing with digital violence against women and children, global issues that are increasingly prominent when a disaster or humanitarian emergency occurs.

"We are proud of the establishment of close cooperation between the Government of Indonesia and the European Union in promoting gender equality and overcoming common challenges," said Ambassador Chaibi.

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture emphasized that this international collaboration is a strategic step to ensure that women and children remain protected, especially in the midst of increasing disaster intensity that carries layered risks, including in the digital space.
