Why is Thaharah Important? This is the Answer Based on the Qur'an and Hadith

YOGYAKARTA - The term thaharah in Islam is known as a part of an important worship to be carried out. Thaharah itself includes wudhu, bathing, removing impurities, tayamum, and matters related to it. So, why is thaharah important?

Quoted from Fiqih Islam wa Adilatuhu Volume 1 Introduction to the Science of Fiqh; Fiqh Madzhab Figures, Niat, Thaharah, Prayer written by Prof. Dr. Wahbah az-Zuhaili, in Arabic, thaharah means clean and pure from dirt or filth. This dirt or hissi can be seen, for example, urination and ma'nawi filth (which is not visible), such as shame and sin.

Thaharah Level

Quoted from Rahasia Bersuci karya Al Imam Abu Hamid Al Ghazali, ada empat tingkatan thaharah yaitu:

Purify the body from all impurities, stains, and dirt; purify the limbs from evil deeds and sins;

This fourth level is the purity possessed by the prophets and the shiddiqin (people who firmly uphold the religion in the midst of many who deny it).

Why is thaharah important in Islam?

This question has been answered in several verses of Allah in the Quran and hadith,

Do not stand in it ever. A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy that you stand in it. In it are men who love to cleanse themselves. And Allah loves those who cleanse themselves.

(QS At Taubah: 108).

"O you who believe! When you rise to prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet to the ankles; and if you are under the burden of a menses, then purify yourself; but if you are ill or on a journey, or any of you comes from the privy, or you have had sexual intercourse, and cannot find water, then cleanse for yourself with clean earth, and wipe your face and your hands therewith; indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.

"O you who believe! When you intend to perform the prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet up to the ankles; and if you are in a state of impurity, then purify yourselves; but if you are sick or traveling, or one of you returns from the toilet, or you have had contact with women, and you cannot find water, then cleanse (yourself) with clean soil; and strike your faces and your hands with it. Allah does not intend to make any hardship for you, but He intends to purify you, and to complete His blessing upon you, that you may be grateful." (QS Al Maidah: 6).

(1) "O you who believe! When you are told to make room in the assemblies, then make room; God will make you make room. When you are told to rise, then rise; God will make you rise. God is Aware of what you do.

"Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves." (QS. Al Baqarah: 222).

(1) "When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

"The key to prayer is purity." (HR Tirmidzi).

"And when you are done with the ablution, glorify Allah, praising Him, and say: 'O my Lord! I have taken refuge in You from the evil of the whisperer, and from the evil of the evil-doer, and from the evil of the one who is obstinate in his disbelief.

"Purity is half of faith." (HR Muslim).

"If Allah does not accept the prayer of one of you when he has just committed a sin, then until he purifies himself, do not accept his prayer."

"Allah does not accept the prayer of any of you when he is in a state of impurity until he performs ablution." (HR Bukhari).

"According to the above verses and hadiths, Islam teaches thaharah as part of the process of cleansing oneself and the only condition for Allah SWT to be pleased with every worship that we do.
