Social Media Can Annoy Sexual Life, How Come?

JAKARTA - The use of social media can indeed have a negative impact on a person's life. This impact can even interfere with the sexual aspect of a person's life.

Many people think social media is a harmless distraction, but subtlely reset the way we connect, regulate our emotions, and that ripple effect will also appear in the bedroom, said therapist Holly Nelson, quoted by Huffpost, on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

As for the way social media can disrupt a person's sexual life, one of which is the effect of low self-appreciation. Using social media continuously can make a person compare himself to people viewed on social media.

This condition can make a person feel low about himself, who can eventually be at risk of having sexual dysfunction or even not wanting sex.

"If we experience low self-esteem, self-confidence or anxiety, we are at risk of having sexual dysfunction or not wanting sex at all," said sexologist and sexuality educator, totaling DeSeta.

In addition, with conservative estimates, adults can spend an average of almost 2.5 hours per day on social media. Then they also have to divide the time to work and other obligations, which make them even less time for intimacy with their partners.

Many couples spend more time in bed staring at the screen, rather than staring at each other or interacting. This condition can make sexual activity and emotional closeness further away from the couple's relationship.

"This choice makes other people feel rejected, and partners can start to get far away emotionally," he said.

The use of social media, especially if it is excessive, can also disrupt sleep, which increases stress. Lack of sleep and stress trigger sexual dysfunction.

"Excessive digital stimulation can hijack brain reward systems, making real-life intimacy feel less attractive and drain energy," Nelson continued.

Therefore, Nelson recommends avoiding time to look at the screen at least one hour before bed. Increase your interaction time with your partner before bed, which is useful for strengthening emotional ties and mutual passion.

Not only that, it is also recommended to change what is seen on social media. Start to see or follow accounts that show the positivity of sex, to those that build confidence.

"Reorganize your algorithm and your pass curation to include diverse and neutral cretae to the body celebrating all forms, sizes and identities," Nelson concluded.
