Conglomerate Retailer Anthony Salim Is Carrying Around, Beware There Is A Message On Whatsapp From 'Cashier Indomaret'
JAKARTA - Directorate of Cyber Crime (Dittipidsiber) Bareskrim Mabes Polri revealed a mode of fraud that can hijack and take over WhatsApp accounts. The fraudster claimed to be a cashier from anthony salim conglomerate's retailer Indomaret, who mis-sent online game vouchers.
"If you receive a WhatsApp chat from an Indomaret cashier who claims to have sent you the wrong online game voucher, you must be vigilant. Because, this is one of the fraud modes to hatch WhatsApp accounts that are now back on the rise," said the Police Cyber Team, as quoted from its official social media account, Tuesday, May 25.
The National Police Cyber Team explained in this mode of fraud that the fake Indomaret cashier sent a message through the WhatsApp application to a candidate who claimed to have mis-input the mobile number and asked to mention the online game voucher code sent to the victim's mobile number.
At the same time, said the Police Cyber Team, fraudsters send SMS containing Thai writing as well as the code in question. Then, the cashier Indomaret will ask for a screenshot of the Thai-language WhatsApp SMS it turns out that it is a 6-digit verification code or one time password (OTP) WhatsApp.
This perpetrator has installed a WhatsApp account and registered the victim's mobile phone number on the account. To take over the account, the perpetrators need a 6-digit verification code sent to the victim's mobile phone number by WhatsApp.
However, because the mobile phone number does not exist in the perpetrators of the crime, they do social engineering by persuading the victim to give a 6-digit SMS by posing as an Indomaret cashier.
