BPOM Finds 32 Illegal Herbal Drugs Risking Kidney Damage To Heart Attack
JAKARTA - BPOM has again revealed the practice of circulating illegal medicinal products (OBA) or herbs. Supervision results throughout October 2025 show that 32 illegal OBA products contain medicinal chemicals (BKO).
Findings in October 2025 were dominated by illegal OBA products with claims to overcome linu sores, which turned out to contain mixtures of BKO such as paracetamol, diklofenak, mefenamate acid, phenilbutaron, pyroxykam, steroids, and indometasin.
In addition, illegal OBA was also found with claims to increase the stamina of men who contained sildenafil and tadalafil, as well as illegal OBA of sub-langsing containing furosemid, bisacodil, and sibutramin.
All of these findings were obtained through the sampling and testing process of 1,373 samples of OBA products, quasi drugs, and health supplements, as well as tracing to distribution and production facilities.
One of the prominent BKOs in the findings this time is indometasin, a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (AINS) that functions as anti-inflammatory. Indomestins are found to be illegally added to herbal products claimed to overcome aches of linu or remetics.
BPOM emphasized that medicinal chemicals should not be used in OBA. The use of products that contain BKO without the supervision of health workers can cause serious side effects. For example, sildenaphiles should only be used based on a doctor's prescription for erectile dysfunction treatment. Use without supervision can cause unstable blood pressure, heart attack, to liver and kidney damage.
In addition to findings in the domestic market, BPOM also received reports regarding two OBA products containing BKO from the drug and food control authority in Thailand. These two products do not have a distribution permit number in Indonesia. Head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar warned of the dangers of illegal OBA products containing BKO to health.
"This is a very dangerous form of fraud. People think it is safe to take herbal medicines, which are believed to come from natural ingredients, even though they are added to chemical drugs that should not be included in herbal medicines, especially carelessly," he said, quoted from the official BPOM website.
This finding shows that there are still business actors who are irresponsible and ignore public safety for personal gain. The mode that is often used is to include a fake or fictitious distribution permit number on the product.
The Ikrar cadet said that BKO mixing into the OBA was carried out solely to increase product effects so that they seemed effective or instant.
"Practices like this not only violate the law, but also damage public trust in Indonesian herbal products," said the Head of BPOM.
BPOM is committed to taking firm action against the circulation of illegal OBAs containing BKO to protect the public. In addition, BPOM has also blocked (takedown) links to the sale of these products online.
Investigations of business actors who produce and distribute illegal products are still ongoing. Perpetrators can be subject to sanctions in accordance with Article 435 jo. Article 138 paragraph (2) and (3) Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health, with a maximum penalty of up to 12 years in prison and/or a maximum fine of IDR 5 billion.
To strengthen supervision, BPOM continues to increase cross-sectoral collaboration with law enforcement officers, related ministries, and digital platforms so that only safe and quality products are circulated. The Head of BPOM also asks the public to remain vigilant and careful in buying and using OBA products and health supplements, especially products with excessive claims or promises instant results.
The public is asked not to use the products listed in these two press release attachments or other illegal OBA products containing BKO that have been previously announced. Always buy products from trusted sources and verify distribution license numbers through the official website of Cekbpom.pom.go.id, the BPOM Mobile application, or the public press/explanatory broadcast menu on pom.go.id.
